Reading is Reading: Mr. John

One of the first faces you see as you enter the library is Mr. John, the security guard. It’s his job to make sure everyone is safe and to help families when they need him. He’s also a big fan of non-fiction! What does he recommend from our library?

The DK Eyewitness Reader series is his favorite. “There’s so many of them,” Mr. John said. “I could get lost in them.”

Each book is about a different topic with lots of great photographs, tons of information, and even a CD of photographs for your computer. From gemstones and  Russian history to mummies and astronomy, the Eyewitness Reader series seems to have a book for everything.

“Even if you have background knowledge in a subject, you can always learn something new when you page through an Eyewitness Reader,” Mr. John said.

More Lego Fun!

Here are more photos of some cool designs from our most recent Lego Club meeting. We were visited by an after school group who enjoyed learning how to make superheroes and build their own skyscrapers!

The Day the Crayons Quit!

The crayons have had enough! Red is working too hard. Orange and Yellow are fighting over who gets to color the sun. So what happens when the crayons quit? Find out as Miss Nancy reads "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.

A Flock of Readers

All last month, we invited visiting patrons to "put a bird on it" and add their own colorful bird to our Story Tree! Here are some of our favorites:

Rochelle made a pair of love birds to sit on a branch together.

Peter loves spooky zombie stories. So he made a zombie bird, complete with protruding eyeball and broken wing, so we'd know for sure it was his bird

Chris made a red bird complete in a Power Ranger costume so his bird can save the day when we need him!

Liz's bird is facing the comics: her favorite section!

Tiana's bird is double-winged for high-flying adventure.

Lego Club gets SUPER!

This week, children learned how to make Super Mario Lego figures! Kids read directions to each other to create these masterpieces. Children were also invited to make up their own creations.

Stop in for our next Lego Club on Thursday October 17 at 4 pm or check out our Lego books to make your own cool stuff at home!
